A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Cassie Dodd and Christian Henry. They are a mother and son duo with 2 creative entrepreneurial projects worth discovering. Cassie is the founder and sole owner of C. Marie Designs, a fabulous clothing line fit to your personal desires. While her son, Christian, is the creator and author of Metrix of the Wind, a new comic soon to make its debut.
Check out their interviews below!
Christian: Metrix of the Wind(Comic)
11 year old, Christian Henry, creator and author of Metrix of the Wind, has quite an interesting story to tell. The basis of his comic, is about a young man, Electrie Chapman, who lives a seemingly normal life. Electrie lives at home with his mom, Victoria Marie, and his granddad, Marvie. But, things get intriguing when we learn, Electrie, police man and volunteer firefighter by day, is also a superhero by night. Fighting the crime in the streets of Chicago, day AND night, Electrie is a hero in both of his roles. Among fighting crime as an officer and protecting the city at night as a superhero, he also mentors young boys, and teaches them how to become men. In my opinion, for a young boy at the age of eleven, to dream up a character who has positive influences on other children his age is incredible. When I asked Christian who he wanted to inspire with his comic, he clearly stated:"I want to help young boys be young men". This is powerful as we want and need young leaders such as this in our communities! Reading through the partial transcript of the comic (can be found on the GoFundMe page), and interviewing Christian, I gathered a pretty good idea who these characters are based on. Marvie, the granddad, is based on his grandfather, who just turned 85 years old, and my educated guess would lead me to believe that Victoria Marie is based on his mother, Cassie, who we also interviewed. Christian's motivation for the comic stemmed from the fact, that there is a lot violence in Chicago, which can be scary for little kids, and quite frankly adults too. He wanted to show that there's much more to the city of Chicago than what we are exposed to. Christian is certainly a very talented kid, and I believe his comic will touch and influence kids his age, as well as adults! Check out our interview with Christian below!

Cassie: C. Marie Designs
PGawd: What do you most want people to know about you and what your brand represents?
"I want people to know that I am a free spirited multipotentialite. I have many interests and dimensions, and like all people I’m not perfect. I have so many hopes and dreams that I feel I haven’t even begun to reach yet. C. Marie the designer, the writer, the person, the brand will forever be evolving. I’m at a point in my life now, where I’ve come to realize that life is about the Journey. It’s about being present in the moment and being grateful for everything that you have. The good and the bad, all of my mistakes and all of my talents I am grateful for. When women wear my designs I want them to feel like goddesses. I always envision myself as this Nubian warrior goddess, and I think it comes through in my designs."
Who is your inspiration for branding and fashion?
"I get my passion for fashion from my mother and all of the other beautiful women in my family. When I was little, my mother shopped! And she was notorious for changing outfits at least 3 times a day. In elementary school we wore uniforms, and I could never just wear my uniform “regularly” I had to throw on little heels, add a vest, some knee highs, I even wore ties. I would put jewels on my face and I wore THEE most jewelry. I got my jewelry fetish from my dad. He always wore leather jackets with gold chains, and gold rings on his fingers. When he bought himself a piece of jewelry he bought some for me as well. I was probably the only 4th and 5th grader with diamond earrings, gold chains, gold bracelets, and a pinky in my class. Now days I am inspired by other designers such as Betsey Johnson and Pnina Tornai. I love them both so much. I am inspired by women. Strong, successful, powerful, Ambitious women: Beyonce, Oprah, Lupita N’ Yong’o, Janet Jackson, Janelle Monae, Rihanna, Jessica White, Serena Williams, Loretta Lynch. I could go on forever honestly! When I see them I see myself. I feel strong and powerful like them. Most importantly I think I am inspired by my past and all that God has brought through. I been at some pretty low places in life. Places I never thought I would recover from. There were times where I thought I would never have dreams and happiness again, but here I am today. I am not perfect, but I am optimistic. I am grateful. I am talented, and I am ready to take on the world."
How long have you been designing?
"I made first dress in high school, in fashion tech class as a sophomore. I started designing in 2014. That’s when I made my first prom dresses. So 2 years now."
When did you decide to start your own brand?
"In high school, I always wanted to be a designer, but when I went to college I wanted to focus on other things. I decided to start my own brand back in 2013 when one of my nieces and my baby sister went off to prom. I saw their dresses and said, “hey I can do that.” Then I asked myself, “why am I not doing that?” the next year in 2014 I started designing."
When did C. Marie Designs debut?
"C. Marie Designs Debuted February 2016. That was the first time I was featured in a fashion show. I was so excited!"
What is the hardest part about being an entrepreneur?
"Wow this question made me laugh. Everything about being an entrepreneur is hard. Not having a consistent paycheck is hard, building your brand on your own is hard, marketing and reaching a large audience with a small budget is hard, and the list goes on."
What is your advice to people (20-24 years old) on pursuing their dreams?
"For anyone pursuing your dreams no matter what age you are be present in the moment and make each moment count. The most important thing to focus on is being ready. If you stay ready, you won’t have to get ready. What I mean by that is, make sure you are taking care of yourself. Honestly you won’t accomplish much if you are not. The small things matter like exercising, writing and reflecting, praying, meditating those things that keep us grounded and from being anxious. Make sure you are listening to your inner self. Let it guide you. practice your craft, even if you only have a few minutes each day to do so. It all adds up. And relax, don’t be worried or down on yourself. You are where you’re supposed to be right now. If you keep working hard you will get further. Oprah said once, “what is the next best move?” I live by that! I ask myself that question every day. In life, it’s so easy to get overwhelmed by everything. By focusing on one thing at a time, I am less stressed and more at peace with my life. Lastly, failure is a part of living so keep moving forward."
